gta Archiv, ETH Zürich
Tamino Kuny
Tamino Kuny (born 1993, Lucerne, Switzerland) is an architect based in Zurich and a doctoral candidate at the gta Archive, Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture, ETH Zurich. His research investigates how municipal architecture competitions in Zurich functioned as political instruments within urban governance between 1946 and 1992. Drawing on a previously unexamined archive of municipal competition records, the project argues that competitions operated not merely as procedures for design selection, but as institutionalized arenas in which elite consensus was constructed and coalitions were formed among municipal authorities, architects, and private actors within the city’s political economy. Complemented by media sources and counter-archival materials, the study foregrounds moments of controversy and professional dissent, revealing the power asymmetries that structured participation and exclusion in these processes.

Prior to joining the gta Archive, he co-edited Hochparterre Wettbewerbe, a professional journal on architecture competitions, where he initiated the Wettbewerbslabor, a biennial platform for competition reform. He is part of ZAS* (Zürcher Arbeitsgruppe für Städtebau), where he contributed to organizing the ideas competition Stadthotel Triemli and to establishing the Ämtli für Städtebau, a para-institutional initiative in urban planning. Through collaborations at praxis c/o, he remains engaged in architectural practice.
